SAIC Motor is publicly listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange but its controlling shareholder is SAIC Group, a state-owned enterprise of the Shanghai municipal government. SAIC acquired the MG brand in 2007 via the assets of the bankrupt MG Rover Group (UK). MG vehicles are designed at a studio in Marylebone, London, and engineered at SAIC's Birmingham (Longbridge) technical centre, but virtually all production for global markets takes place in China.
